Russian conductor looks forward to Sochi Games from Vancouver
March, 02
One of the most outstanding conductors of his generation, Maestro Valery Gergiev demonstrated a slightly unorthodox connection with his orchestra during this year’s Winter Games.
Gergiev impressed millions of sport and music fans around the world watching the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in Vancouver.
During the welcoming ceremony of the southern Russian city of Sochi as the next Winter Games host city, the celebrated Russian conductor managed to lead his Mariinsky Orchestra – performing in the heart of Moscow's Red Square – live from Vancouver.
Making clear that neither time nor distance can affect him, Gergiev wielded his powerful baton while the Mariinsky Symphony Orchestra played Georgy Sviridov's festive piece “Time forward!”
